Five Great Myoo
Among the different enlightened beings called Myoo, there is a special group known as the “Five Great Myoo”.
These Five Myoos are selected and appointed to protect different directions: the central direction and the four cardinal directions (east, west, south, and north).
They are like guardians safeguarding these important areas.
Central
First, the center is protected by a Fudo. With his sword and snare, he will scourge those who disobey the teachings of the Buddha.
East
The guardian of the east side is Gozan! She is dressed in a tiger pattern, a symbol of strength.
She is trampling on the evil gods.
South
Gunda, the guardian deity of the south side of the island, is a snake charmer and crusher of evil. He is also the patron god of health and disease-free.
West
The west side is guarded by Dai-itoku, which overcomes all obstacles and difficulties with its mounted divine messenger, the water buffalo.
North
Yasha, a guardian of the north, was originally a bad guy who reformed and became a hero.
